It’s the classic tale we’ve all grown to love: having recently returned from studying abroad, the Prince needs to find a wife. His parents, the King and Queen, decide to celebrate his twenty-first birthday with all the royal festivities. It is duly announced that the prince will hold a ball, to which all the eligible ladies of the kingdom are invited. Cinderella, an unfortunate girl with few hopes of ever coming close to the prince, dreams of attending the ball along with her stepsisters, Joy and Portia, who make all the necessary preparations. Left behind while they set off to dance with the prince, Cinderella receives a special visit from her Fairy Godmother. The Fairy Godmother transforms Cinderella into a beautiful young woman and sends her on her way to meet the prince. When she arrives at the ball, the prince is immediately smitten by her. They dance the night away, but she rushes away from the castle just before the stroke of midnight only to fall and leave her glass slipper behind. The next day, the prince orders the palace guards to try the slipper on every girl in the kingdom until the slipper’s owner is found. Without finding any feet the exact size of the small shoe, the guards return the slipper to the prince, who happens to meet Cinderella wandering in the royal gardens. He comes to recognize the girl’s features and easily places the glass shoe upon Cinderella’s petit foot. This confirms to the prince that Cinderella is to be the girl he marries; the story ends…Happily Ever After, of course!

Following in the footsteps of the great family musicals that have appeared on the Tuacahn stage in recent seasons, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella brings you all the enchantment, romance, and suspense of one of the world’s most classic fairy tales. Combined with the loveable score by one of America’s foremost songwriting teams, this production will delight the entire family.

About the Authors: RICHARD RODGERS AND OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II

After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces to create the most consistently fruitful and successful partnership in the American musical theatre. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, representing a unique fusion of Rodgers' musical comedy and Hammerstein's operetta. A milestone in the development of the American musical, it also marked the beginning of the most successful partnership in Broadway musical history, and was followed by Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music. Rodgers & Hammerstein wrote one musical specifically for the big screen, State Fair, and one for television, Cinderella. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals earned 35 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards, two Pulitzer Prizes, two Grammy Awards and 2 Emmy Awards. In 1998 Rodgers & Hammerstein were cited by Time Magazine and CBS News as among the 20 most influential artists of the 20th century and in 1999 they were jointly commemorated on a U.S. postage stamp.
