This year we are incredibly lucky to have Jonah Ho’okano performing in all three outdoor Broadway musicals. Discovered by Disney at an audition in his home state of Hawai’i, Jonah began a highly successful professional career in musical theater, including the title role for the first National Tour of Aladdin: The Hit Broadway Musical!
Now, for his first season at Tuacahn, he will be playing Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen, the Tsar in Anastasia, and Tommy DeVito in Jersey Boys.
Not only is Jonah a phenomenally talented actor, singer, and dancer, he also takes great pride in his heritage.
He says, “Everything I do in life is influenced by my identity as a Polynesian, as a Hawaiian, and as a child of the Hawaiian renaissance growing up on Oʻahu. I view the world through a very unique lens because of who I am and where I come from. AAPI month is an opportunity to remind people that those things matter—our roots, our histories, and where we come from—and they deserve to be remembered and celebrated.”
The complexity of Jonah’s heritage, which includes Hawaiian, Chinese, Filipino, Puerto Rican, Portuguese, Irish, German, and English Canadian, has also influenced how he approaches his professional life. The native Hawaiian part, in particular, has shaped him into both a caring and empathetic altruist and a noble and resilient warrior.
He explains, “I carry both of these mentalities with me in every contract I take. Every audition isn’t just some interview to succeed at; it’s an opportunity to make new friends and create something special. It’s a balance between holding respect and knowing your worth. That, to me, is a very ‘Hawaiian’ way of living and has ultimately made me a better performer/professional.”
Speaking of his mixed heritage, Jonah says, “I love them, and I’m lucky to have them— they’re the ingredients in the complex recipe that makes me, me.”
