Today we are highlighting Troy McGee who, before working at Tuacahn, was both a professional road bike racer and a professional ballet dancer! Now he is celebrating 15 years at Tuacahn, where he started as a performer on the stage, then moved into helping with set construction in the shop. Last year, he took on the role of Assistant Technical Director.
What this means is that Troy can use both his performance and carpentry expertise to translate scenic design plans into AutoCAD models, complete with build specifications, for those in the shop to create. Then he oversees the actual construction and rigging to keep things safe for the actors and absolutely magical for the audience!
Not many people are so talented in so many areas! Read on to learn more about Troy!
How long have you worked at Tuacahn?Â
The first time I performed on the Tuacahn stage was with Thriller in 2008. The next year I was cast in Tuacahn’s Broadway musical season, and the following year, in 2010, I also started helping in the scene shop.
- What do you do for Tuacahn?
Currently, I’m the Assistant Technical Director. I’ve also worked in the Scene Shop as a Carpenter and Shop Foreman, but I started my Tuacahn life as a performer.
- What is your favorite part of working at Tuacahn?
I love the journeys we get to take our audiences on. Whether it’s seeing the smile on the kids’ faces in our Disney shows, the pure joy on their faces during our upbeat shows, or the tears streaming down their faces in our more emotional shows. Being in different roles out here, it’s been important for me to remember that it’s about the product and value we provide our patrons.
What is your favorite show you’ve seen at Tuacahn?
Admittedly, I haven’t actually seen that many shows at Tuacahn, but I’ve performed in over 30. Of those, I would say The Prince of Egypt and The Hunchback of Notre Dame are probably my 2 favorites, but Starlight Express was also a blast to perform. I also got to dance and make-out on stage with my wife (Erica Bryce) in a few shows, so that’s always a good time.
- Something fun about you/something that people might not know.
Erica and I started dating during Thriller down here in 2008. We met about a month and a half earlier, when rehearsals had started, and I guess the canyon worked its magic on us. It has been a dream getting to spend almost the entirety of our careers together.
