Not everyone gets the chance to turn childhood dreams into reality, but this summer, that’s exactly what’s happened for Daisy Wright. Coming back to her hometown to perform at Tuacahn was dream number one. Number two was starring as Anna in Disney’s Frozen. The icing on the cake was that it was the regional premiere of Disney’s Frozen at Tuacahn and she would also be performing as ensemble and swing in Jersey Boys: The Story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and Anastasia. This year has been a dream come true for Daisy, but the journey to this point has been filled with hard work, dedication, and love for the craft—and her family.
Daisy grew up in Southern Utah and her dream of performing at Tuacahn began as young girl attending the shows. “It’s so beautiful here! I really took it for granted growing up,” she reflects, marveling at the stunning red rocks surrounding Tuacahn. Although she always adored the amphitheatre, this summer marks her first time performing on its stage—a full-circle moment that has been deeply meaningful.
When the opportunity to audition for the role of Anna presented itself, Daisy worked incredibly hard to land it. “I remember when I saw that Tuacahn was doing Disney’s Frozen, I called my husband and said, ‘What if I could do Anna?’” she recalls. She happened to be in rehearsals for a show in Texas at the time of Tuacahn’s auditions, but she was determined to make it happen. She flew in, auditioned, and flew home all within a 36-hour period. When the virtual callback came, she was meticulous with her recording. It had to be perfect! Finally, Daisy received the call she’d been waiting for: the role was hers.
Each night Daisy steps into the spotlight, she feels a connection to her childhood dreams. She says, “There’s one moment in ‘The First Time in Forever’ where I sing, ‘For the first time in forever, I’m getting what I’ve been dreaming of,’ and every night I think, ‘I am! This is Tuacahn, my home. I got what I dreamed of since I was little.’”
While she’s performed in musicals across the nation, Daisy’s life at Tuacahn has been a complete departure from what she’s accustomed to as a performer. Usually, Broadway performers prepare for one production and perform it night after night until the show’s run has closed. Tuacahn is unique in that it produces three outdoor Broadway musicals in repertoire. That means performers memorize their parts in all three shows and then switch between them each night from May through October. “It was so scary at first,” Daisy admits. “I’d never done anything like this before. My brain was crammed full!”
While the beginning of the season was a whirlwind of preparation, rehearsals, and performances, now she’s settled in and found balance, enjoying the different energy levels required for each show. Through it all, Daisy is savoring time with her family. “I’m living with my family while I’m here, which is really lovely,” she says with a smile. “Pretty much every night I have someone I know out in the audience. My family has been so supportive!”
Despite the intensity, the opportunity to perform at Tuacahn is something Daisy cherishes. “There’s a little line in Anastasia—‘I’ll bless my homeland until I die.’ I remember one day during rehearsal, looking out at the red rocks and thinking, ‘I do bless my homeland.’ It’s been so cool to be back.”
